Design Fundamentals

Sliceform

This project focuses on designing a 6-sided container using AutoCAD. This container cannot be a cube, only must stand on one side, and have a maximum 3 gaps.

In this project, I plan to design a stable object, since when the lecturer showed others' works, they all fell easily. The idea of chisel holes was inspired by the Kong Ming Lock in China, known as a mortise and tenon joint structure. This structure can make the object stable. The only problem I met when I assembled it was I forgot to consider gravity. Consequently, the bottom side tilts down.

Besides using AutoCAD, the lecturer taught us how to use Rhinocero3D to build up our sides in computer to make sure each side fits into each other perfectly.

I really enjoyed working on this project and want to learn more about how to create furniture or other objects. It took a lot of time, since I needed to calculate the length and width for each whole and frame. I feel really proud when I see my finished object assembled and stable.
