A Mobius strip is a continuous object that has only one surface and one boundary edge. If you were to draw a line starting at a specific point, you would be able to continue drawing the line and reach your starting point without picking up your pencil. Or as many people like to put it—you could have an ant crawl along the strip and travel along the entire length of it without ever crossing an edge.
With our assignment, we first took one 4x4 inch square and were told that we could only make one interior cut, and that our model could only have one surface and one edge. Returning to the next class with many odd paper sculptures, it was then explained to us the concept of a mobius strip, and several examples were shown.
We then had to make five mobius strips models of our own, and input our favorite model (or models) into AutoCAD using basic geometric principles to simplify them. Finally, we took one of our models from AutoCAD and printed it off onto cardstock, making a finished mobius strip that we photographed. |
