The Pheasant Ridge Center is located on the west side of Iowa City, nestled in the middle of the Pheasant Ridge Apartments.  The Pheasant Ridge community is extremely diverse with both UI students and IC families living and working together to build a strong community.  Currently, the Pheasant Ridge Center site serves a large number of immigrant families living in the neighborhood--primarily families from the Sudan and Jordan.  To meet the diverse needs and wants of such a diverse community, we offer the following programs:

1)      Full-day child development programs for infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged children living in this neighborhood.  Staff and curriculum reflect the diverse population served; many staff are bi-lingual and speak both English and Arabic (the language of Sudan/Jordan).  Child Development programs act as a bridge between home and school--supporting the home language and culture, while teaching children and families about the U.S. and school culture.

2)     Extensive youth development programs for children and youth, grades K-12.  Youth programs include school-age enrichment activities, like after-school art, percussion, and Arabic-language clubs, as well as evening teen groups and programming.  In addition, youth programs offer tutoring programs for all youth (K-12th grade), in-school mentoring opportunities, and numerous recreation and social experiences for children.  Youth Development programs support all children in school and work closely with parents and classroom teachers to best meet the academic and social needs of neighborhood youth.

3)     Many parent and family development programs for all the PR neighborhood adults.  Every parent and adult in the PR community has access to in-home parenting visits by our Parent Support staff, as well as numerous opportunities for parent groups and for building support networks.  In addition, PR offers extensive formal and informal adult education opportunities.  Many of the immigrant families attend free English classes; Many adults work with staff to complete their high-school education or beginning college education; Many adults learn computer skills in our computer lab; etc.

4)     Wide-variety of community development opportunities for all adults and children living in the PR community--opportunities for neighbors to meet neighbors, as well as opportunities to build a stronger neighborhood community.  Community development includes a NCJC neighborhood advisory council, family events, cultural celebrations, a monthly community newsletter (written in both English and Arabic), a computer room open to the neighborhood, a community garden, and numerous informal opportunities for the PR community members to build a better neighborhood for us all.
