We live in a world of increasing globalization and are watching cultural and artistic identities being weakened by the power of communications. As a designer and architect, I praise the use of technology to develop new designs but also value community identity. I see the Design process as an opportunity to create functional art where my knowledge of materials, processes and its specific application can be combined with my cultural background and professional experience.

Developments in digital computer technologies in the 50’s established the basis for the development of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) technologies. Since then, CAD and CAM technologies have been improving design development, construction methods and replacing traditional building processes and human labor. Computers, software and automated technology are now available for both small and large scale production. In addition, virtual Reality (VR) is a novel and powerful technology with wide applications in design. Virtual Reality creates digital three-dimensional spaces or objects and allows the observer to interact with the project through the use of special shutter glasses and tactile-simulating gloves.

In 1994 I began working with CAD technology and professionally designed interiors for shopping malls, stores, restaurants and booths using a variety of 2D and 3D software. In 2006, I started experimenting Rapid Prototyping (RP) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technologies to design objects. Rapid Prototyping allows projects that are digitally developed with modeling software to be transferred to a printing center where the object is generated. CNC allows automated equipment to be controlled and operated in the x, y and z axes to create forms designed with modeling software.

I have been actively working with CAD, CAM, CNC, RP and VR technologies to create objects inspired on my traditions but the impact on the environment is a major concern. These technologies are undoubtedly very important for the development of Design but must be employed sustainably. Last Fall, supported by a Flexible Load Assignment and the Obermann Center, I conducted pilot research with environmentaly safe materials. Currently, I am combining technology with sustainable materials to design furniture and objects. Research is key for the development of sustainable spaces and furnishings that are also affordable to the common citizen.

Designers should go far beyond the fabrication of fashionable products and join in the global efforts for sustainability of human society on Earth. Along with design research and development, CAD technology plays an important role in this endeavor. Indeed, I promote among my students an environmentally conscious attitude towards academic and professional life, proving that technology and tradition can harmonize with the environment protection.

I believe design can make a difference.
