Conference Update

Grace Ann Mims, Ph.D., President Elect

Happy New Years NCACES colleagues!  Hope you all had a great holiday and are rested and ready for the spring semester.  My family and I took a trip to St. Louis to search for a hotel for the NCACES conference and to do a little site seeing.  We had the best time.  St. Louis is an awesome place for a conference.  There is so much to do and see.  And our timing is perfect as 2004 is a special year for St. Louis as it celebrates the 200th year of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and the Louisiana Purchase and the 100th anniversary of the 1904 Worlds Fair. The city has planned many special events to mark these historic anniversaries.  The re-creation of the giant Farris wheel is on display at Forest Park.  The Bridge close to our hotel will be closed for the summer so that people may experience a 7-course meal over the Mississippi!  And don’t forget the Arch – it has an incredible museum which is dedicated to documentation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

While we were in St. Louis, we stayed at four hotels, all of which were impressive.  For the last 2 weeks Matt and I have been struggling with how to choose the best one.  Our 6-year old son, Griffin, voted for the hotel that provided us with the best view of the Arch and sent up a surprise tray of wine, bread, cheese, cookies and milk!  However, we decided to go with the hotel that had the best conference rooms and most responsive staff, The Adam’s Mark Hotel.

Adam’s Mark Hotel

For Reservations call 1.800.444.ADAM (2326)

The Adam’s Mark is located across from the Gateway Arch and within two blocks of Laclede’s Landing and Busch Stadium. Easy access on the MetroLink is available to visit the Union Station, Soulard, Zoo, Art Museum, Forest Park and gaming boats.  For more information about the hotel go to http://www.adamsmark.com/stlouis/index.asp.  Make your reservations directly with the Adam’s Mark/St. Louis at 1.800.444.ADAM (2326) or 314.241.7400.  When making reservations be sure to ask for the NCACES Conference special rate of $109.00 (single or double).  These rates will be in effect for three (3) days before and three (3) days after the actual conference dates.  The MetroLink is the recommended transportation from Lambert Airport to Adam’s Mark Hotel (17 minutes).

This year’s conference theme will be Building Bridges:  University-Community Partnerships in Counselor Education.  I talked about this theme even in my goal statement for president nominations in 2002.  Here is what I said then and still reflects my goals for our conference today… “I would like to foster linkages to the community through university-community partnerships.  Such partnerships provide internships while also proving research and grant opportunities for counselor educators.  I am excited about the many ways in which counselor educators in our region are reaching out to their communities and would like to celebrate those and foster others.  My involvement in several community action partnerships has informed about the strength of counseling programs that are anchored in their communities.” An invitation to showcase your university-community partnerships or provide topical information about partnerships is in the Call for Proposals in this newsletter.

At last years conference, Dr. Leslie O’Ryan and I were talking about our wonderful mentors, Dr. Joan England and Dr. Orla “Chris” Christensen who are now professor emeriti.   We discussed how much we miss having them and all the other emeriti members at the NCACES conference.  This longing to see our mentors lead to a decision to include a special tribute to NCACES Emeriti faculty members at our Awards Reception on Friday night.  Leslie has written a brief description of this new tribute, Counseling Legacy, presented in this newsletter.  If you are an emeritus member of NCACES please contact Leslie at LW-O-Ryan@wiu.edu so that we may provide you with a personal invitation to the conference.  Those of you who have had special mentors and would like to see then recognized at 2004 conference please contact Leslie as well.

Another topic that kept coming up at the conference was NCACES members desire to provide financial assistance to graduate students who attend our conference.  As a result, Dr. Jane Cox has agreed to coordinate a Conference Moderator program whereby graduate students could apply to moderate workshops by introducing the presenters at the beginning and distributing and collecting evaluations at the end.  Compensation for this service would be a fee reduction.

It was brought to my attention last year that the NCACES business meeting needs to be run according to Roberts Rules of Order.  While I have had some experience with formal meeting procedures I know I will need assistance and have asked Dr. Toni Tollerud to serve as the Parliamentarian.  Thanks Toni!

As President, I hope to continue the outstanding work of the leaders and members of NCACES. My contributions will reflect how NCACES has been a professional home to me.  See you in St. Louis!!!
