Field trip to Turrialba Volcano in Costa Rica

I spent several months conducting field work at Turrialba in the early 1980s and through the 1990s when earthquake and fumarolic activity was minimal. The 2000s have brought several significant earthquake swarms and significantly enhanced fumarolic activity. I returned to Turrialba in June, 2007 following the MARGINS "Workshop to Integrate Subduction Factory and Seismogenic Zone Studies in Central America" to observe this activity with Elicer Duarte and Erick Fernández from OVSICORI.

Aggregating fumes from Turrialba's west crater

Sulfur precipitating from fumarolic gasses. Eliecer recording changes in the summit region.
Fumarolic activity on the north slope of Turrialba's crater. E. Duarte and E.Fernández collecting samples
A cloudy Irazu volcano. Recent effects of acid rain on some local flora.
