Field trips to Guam, Saipan, Rota, and Palau

My Master's thesis research was conducted on Guam in the early 1980s (Reagan and Meijer, 1984). With the selection of the Izu-Bonin-Mariana (IBM) island arc as a focus site by the MARGINS initiative, students colleagues, and I have revisited the IBM forearc islands to update our understanding of the evolution of volcanism following subduction initiation. The first publication based on this work is Reagan et al. (2008) in the Journal of Petology.

High-Ca boninite pillow Lava on Guam. Note the zeolite facies metamorphism, yet glassy pillow rinds.
Weathered pillow lavas on Guam

Shoreline near the town of Umatac on Guam. Early arc pillow lavas on Palau (with Shinkai science team).
Sherm Bloomer with boninite dikes and pillow lavas. Dike swarm in quarry on Palau.
Jellyfish Lake - Palau. Giant clam - Palau.
High-Si rhyolites cropping out on Bird Island, Saipan The volcanic stratigraphy on the south-facing slope of Rota. Notice the wave-cut terraces on the skyline.
