The First Place Project

2004
Computer-Aided Design

This is a set of four buildings designed as a housing development for young people who decided to live independently and start a life out of their own. It was designed to be located in downtown Rio de Janeiro. Surrounded by tall, modern buildings and historical constructions, the complex tries to bridge the historical gap between them. The verticality of the modern buildings is balanced by the length of each block and each block borrows traditional architectural features from the traditional constructions. All buildings are handicapped accessible and besides housing the project provides a public square for outdoor activities, roof gardens, retail spaces and an office space for young entrepreneurs who wish to start a business.

Project designed in collaboration with Ana Paula Dutra, Daniella Cassano, Isabella Faria and Graziella Vanzan

Honorable mention at the 2004 IAB-Caixa Low-Income Housing Awards, sponsored by the Brazilian Institute of Architects and Caixa Econômica Federal, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
