Community-University Partnerships in Counselor Education

The theme of the 2004 NCACES Conference reflects a powerful trend across America to create university-community partnerships that contribute to and revitalize communities. The focus of this conference will be to showcase the partnership work being conducted by NCACES members within their communities and to provide members with best practices, opportunities, and challenges for building partnerships.  By partnering with community-based organizations, local governments, and school districts counselor educators are helping to improve the social conditions of their neighboring communities while providing opportunities for themselves and students to apply academic knowledge to real-world conditions.   Such partnerships bring communities and counseling programs together as equal partners and create opportunities for collaboration as well as healthier communities.  Counselor educators can meet teaching, research and service requirements through partnerships by providing avenues for faculty collaboration, service learning, grant writing and community based research.   In addition, partnerships can provide opportunities for counselor education programs to address specific CACREP standards otherwise difficult to attain. NCACES members are encouraged to submit proposals describing successful community-university partnerships they have forged in their communities.  In addition, proposals are being solicited would which address any of the following partnership topics.

Historical Perspective on Community Partnerships

Scholarship Significance of Partnerships and Scholarship

Best Practices and Principles of Partnerships

Community Perspective on Partnerships

Partnerships with Urban and Rural School Districts

Service Learning and Partnerships

Grant opportunities for Partnerships

Partnership Evaluation and community-based research

Challenges to Community Partnerships

Recognition of Community Partnerships for Promotion and Tenure
