Sycomore, Database of French Deputies since 1789

Wonderful resource from the website of the Assemble Nationale (when the relatively unreliable search functions work properly—the keyword nom contient search option seems to work best). Currently contains biographical notes for assemblies from the Estates General through the Constituent Assembly of 1848, as well as digitized copies of the Dictionnaire des Parlementaires franais de 1789 1889, 1889-1940, 1940-1958 (from GALLICA). The Histoire et Patrimoine section of the Assemble Nationale site offers links to further digital treasures, including institutional histories, transcriptions of key debates, and the Assembles archives and library.

ARTFL, American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language

Among the highlights of this indispensable resource: a fully searchable database of digitized texts from the 17th-20th centuries (FRANTEXT), a searchable version of Diderot and dAlemberts Encyclopdie, and the Trsor de la Langue Franaise dictionary. New additions include a database of texts by French women writers (16th-19th centuries).

The Image of France, by George McKee (SUNY Binghamton)

A searchable index of all printed imagery (engravings, lithographs, woodcuts, etc.) registered with the Dpt Lgal and authorized for publication in France. Most entries include title, artist and publisher. Currently covers November 1811-January 1831. Many of the images can be found in the BNFs Dpartement des Estampes et de la Photographie, in the Histoire de France (Qb1) collection and the Collection DeVinck. Part of the ARTFL family, but deserves its own entry!

LHistoire par limage, 1789-1939

A joint project of the Muses de France and the Archives de France to offer both an illustrated history of France and a cultural history of art from the French Revolution to the beginning of WW2. Presentation by theme or chronology; entries for each work include historical context and visual analysis.

Des villages de Cassini aux communes daujourdhui

A fantastic website from the Bibliothque nationale de France charting the evolution of French territorial units from 1801 to the present. It cross-indexes a database of administrative and demographic data for the communes with a database of contemporary administrative delimitations (BD-Carto, IGN) and the 18th-century Cassini map of France. A goldmine of demographic, historical, and cartographic information.

Alexis de Tocqueville, on-line exhibition from the French Ministry of Culture

MUSEA, Universit dAngers

Virtual museum of the history of women and gender. Hosted by the Universit dAngers. Includes special exhibitions and pedagogical dossiers on topics ranging from courtly love in the 14th and 15th centuries to Orientalism in the colonial postcard and European football in the early 20th century.
