Deciding on a wireless home alarm
Living on campus has its perks and its down sides. I came to school thinking about how cool it would be that I wouldn't be living with my parents and that I would have all the time in the world to just do my own thing. That of course, for any of you who have or do live in the dorms have realized, is definitely not the case when it comes to living in the housing areas. Personally I found the experience of living in the dorms to be more intrusive than living at home. I mean from the communal showers to the four other guys living in your room, you have absolutely no way of being yourself without totally alienating yourself. It sounds crazy but it's true. That is why this semester I am living off campus.
Now I know that much in the same way I had previously idealized life in the dorms, my preconceptions about life off campus have also bee laid to the stone and brightened by the light of the truth. Where before I had trouble with privacy and issues of too much going on within my own living space, ow I worry more about the ways in which things will go on when I am not here. Now that I live in a house I am not the only person living here who wants to just be free. I am also not protected by the lovable resident advisors that I had once dreaded. Now I rely on the home alarm system to make sure things work out for me. Our landlord made sure that we all knew when we moved in that this house has bee prone to robbery in the past. That is why he decided to put in a GE simon XT which is a wireless home alarm system. Essentially I have replaced the overbearing comforts of the dorms for the overbearing yet watchful eye of my landlord. I think it is sort of a silly trade off but I still feel like I made the right decision and that I wouldn't want to give this up to go back to the dorms for anything.
