Rapid prototyping is the latest and most advanced technology we employ here at the University of Iowa School of Art. Without getting too technical, rapid prototyping is essentially printing a physical object. Very similar to CNC, these machines require computer models and precise data to begin creating a physical model layer by layer. We have two RP printers. One extrudes a thin thread of plastic (ABS) that builds up a very sturdy piece when finished. Our other machine prints in color and uses a powder substrate that binds with a type of glue to build up the layers. It's amazing technology. |
