crazy weekend

I had a crazy weekend with athletics. In the end we had quite a few athletic events and my sister came to Iowa City to play in a soccer tournament. At the end of the weekend I had taken quite a few pictures and needed to upload a few more. Unfortunately, I had run out of space on my flickr account and finally decided to upgrade to a pro account. So if you have any time check out some of the photos from the weekend.

Echoes of a Dream

I stayed in Iowa City this weekend to cover a few sports. My 3rd year student instead had to travel with the swim team to Michigan State. Besides being an 8 hr trip, one of the buses had a flat; meaning the buses had to combine. They also are staying an hour away from the pool where they are swimming. On top of that they had to practice in the outdoor pool. That would have been great if it was in Florida or Arizona, but it was Michigan in late October with temps in the 40's. I may have gotten the long straw this weekend.

There was no new episode of Grey's Anatomy tonight, and I was a little disappointed. On the other hand Shellie was very disappointed and much like the sign minus the lucky and that was Shellie. Don't mess with her shows. I just hope she never gets into soap operas.

training athletically?

We had an athletic training fall get together tonight. It was something I was unable to get done last year as the class president and something I feel was the most detrimental to the classes. Not to make excuses but after putting in hours and hours and making call after call the restaurant we had worked with for the past 10 yrs refused to follow through without a huge rental fee. After some negotiations we had such a small turnout it was beyond anything that was feasible. I am glad to say that Wade was able to follow up the absence of last years party with a great one tonight. The Vine in Coralville proved very hospitable to our needs and the environment allowed everyone to get to know each other. All in all a very successful night and a thank goes out to Wade for some great planning.

3-3. We are currently tied with Michigan (2). I certainly didn't think it was going to be close, but I guess last week I didn't think it was going to be close either. Last night we got smoked. And by smoked I mean killed. The men's and women's team weren't even close, but there was some improvement. My hat goes off to Minnesota, nice job, you were the better aquatic masters.

Moon over Minnesota

This Friday I head to a swim meet at the University of Minnesota. It's going to be nice to have an away meet. It just means less work as I will only be taking care of one team instead of the visitors as well. But, it also means I have to travel on a bus for 9hrs. Luckily we aren't spending the night, so the day trip makes the weekend even better. The BigTen always has great hospitality and the University of Minnesota also has great facilities as well.

Riomaggiore, the road less traveled

So I found this picture on flickr and remembered the walk in those hills. And now I'm here just trying to slow down. Trying to keep up with 50 open cases and 3-4 teams. And I realize and need to say being as busy as I am makes me appreciate the travel that I have done even more. If only I could have a little piece of that culture and environment here. So slow down everyone you're moving too fast.

well this week was certainly interesting. the swim meet went ok this weekend. we got smoked by wisconsin madison and beat wisconsin milwaukee. some people swam well some people did not, but definitely not an indication what is going to happen in the spring. overall nothing very remarkable.

what is remarkable is men's basketball. they travel to st. thomas, virgin islands over thanksgiving break. Streif, the head basketball trainer, will be with basketball, so Floy the grad assistant needs help. and how convenient that I am available for a week in the sun. so in advance happy thanksgiving.

Professor?

Shellie has just been appointed as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Clinical and Administrative Pharmacy Division of the College of Pharmacy at the University of Iowa. Way to go genius. I couldn't be more proud of her.

Another note from one of the athletes not native to this country. He was discussing his performance relative to others in practice compared to competition. His statement inlcuded," I suck at practice but I bring it to the meets. I deliver. I'm Fedex." Nice to know Fedex has a world wide audience. Also nice to know that trash talking has moved outside of football and basketball.

This semester I am taking the graduate statistics course. To put it mildly it is hell. I had taken a stats course as an undergrad and calculus in high school. But after that math has been an afterthought when reading scientific journals. Sort of like the use it or lose it theory, I think I lost it. We had a midterm yesterday, in a format I hadn't taken since chemistry as a freshman in undergrad, but luckily I had spent the past week and half studying Scheffe and Tukey. I might have actually passed the exam which means I only have half a semester left. That also means I am now a week and a half behind in the other classes. Thankfully, there is no home football game but we do have two swim meets, Friday and Saturday. Believe it or not two swim meets is much better than one home football games. Swimming is much more civil, carefully planned, and in the end there is much less chaos. That is coming from a planning and athletic training perspective. For most of the state on the other hand I will refer to Billy Welch's rendition of "In Heaven There is No Beer."

weekend update

a quick note that i didn't have to work this weekends game. I had asked for someone to cover one game this year and I picked homecoming. Shellie's old roommate came to town as did some of my old roommates. I tailgated and watched the game at my house and believe it or not I thought it was a great and relaxing way to watch the game. Opting out of a ticket just made the day more relaxing and gave me less commitments. It turned out to be a gorgeous day and a great weekend to catch up with everyone.

another note. shellie's brother once tried to help out a philanthropic event by giving an afternoon of his time to help coach and play basketball with a youth. there were several youth at the event and the child who had won the day with him traded his prize with another kid who had just won a crockpot.

the hype surrounding the game this weekend was amazing. it truly was a great game until the 4th quarter. my brother tony came this weekend and helped me take care of everything surrounding the game. it was nice to have only one set of guests for a weekend. it was so much easier to entertain and take care of them. all in all a great weekend except for the 4th quarter of that game.
