Afternoon in the Fast Lane

Razorblade Afternoon
Originally uploaded by Thomas Hawk.
It seems I can always catch up with yesterday in the mornings. Buy by the afternoon I only start the cycles of cases again. I finally caught up with a bit of statistics and other courses but with 100+ athletes cases just seem to be building and building. I figure it will get done some day. And if it doesn't is someone going to die. You answer that question for me, I don't want to jinks myself.

Applebee's

So I came home today and Shellie said it was time to go out to eat. We really haven't been out to eat in a while. In general, it's pretty difficult to agree on a place to eat. But today Shellie said she wanted to pick. Of course I obliged. I should also note we don't usually go to chain restaurants. We aren't snobs or restauranteurs, quite the oppositve, But we know what we like. We usually just go to local places, one of a kind places, we even eat bar food. but in general we stay away from chain restaurants like Chili's or TGIF's. Tonight of course we went to Applebee's. The service was horrible, there was no host/ess, the bartender sat us, we sat at our table for 10 minutes waiting for someone to even take our drink order (the place was less than half full), Shellie was served the wrong food (well half the wrong food she ordered a Oriental Chicken wrap and recieved a Buffalo Chicken wrap with the soy sauce dip (don't ever try the combo it was horrible)). We didn't even send the food back, my food was cold (I got the nachos), how do you even serve cold nachos. Sometime's I wonder how hard it can be to warm this stuff up, mix it all together, and send it out. It must be a lot more difficult than I think. It still was a great night together, but I can guarantee I won't be back. I think I may be avoiding chain restaurants a little more vigilantly.

Football

The first Iowa football game is this Saturday. Though I will not be the whole Jon who had been there since 2000 I will truly be there. I won't be tailgating at 5:30am though I truly wish I could. I will be on the field. My experience this year with football with be so completely different than any of my other experiences with Iowa football. I've been on the field before, I don't think I was welcome there, but I stormed the field with everyone else. This time I will be completely welcome there, but not completely celebrating Iowa football like I had in years past. We will see how it compares but I think it should be about equitible. I'll let you all know.

I haven't started the grad stats homework nor another paper due on tuesday. i guess what i'm asking is if this is a bad joke or something? And while I'm complaining. I haven't seen the sun in the last week. Now I know why all my friends in cubicles cry.

It got done and I'm pretty sure that means it was a successful night. Not all the kids showed up. I don't know if that means they will be unsucessful. I think that would be a great research project. What will be the success rate depending on how dependable you are your first couple weeks at college. There were have to be some correlation.

Hopefully tomorrow we go back to some review and do some remedial work. I'm doubting thats the case so I better get ready for a challenge.

Grad School

City Hall Night, #2
Originally uploaded by Thomas Hawk.
The first day of school has come and gone. It was school as I have known it for the past 6 yrs. Unfortunately, it looks like I am going to have to fight through students to make it between the hospital, east campus, and the field house the entire semester. The training room looks like it's only going to get busier. I don't know if it will be possible to keep my hours at 20 hours per week. Faye my preceptor last year gave me a bunch of tomatoes out of her garden. She had a ton extra and they look gorgeous. I was thinking about canning them for marinara this fall or making some salsa. There is about 8 lbs of them so I don't think there will be a shortage any time soon. By the way I love tomatoes, in fact I love food. But then again, who doesn't?

we had the beginning of the year set of meetings today. not that today was the beginning of the year meaning january 1st or even the first day of work. it's always a tad boring no matter how hard they try. we cover hipaa, osha, ferpa, and a bunch of other organizations that i only remember the names of 1 month before and after this meeting.
i also got to meet the incoming first year class. they are much different than the first time i came into contact with them which was when they were interviewing for their positions. they seem to be a good group of kids but then again they have only had 2 weeks in the program. we also had the fall bash which has changed dramatically from the 1st one i had been to. this year a couple and their infant sat at our table and asked us about athletic training. not the future of the profession or where we see oursleves in 10 yr but rather what the profession is and what we do in our day to day work. it was a unique way to welcome in the new school year. most of the staff was able to make it to the party which was great as well. all of grad assistants were there which let us interact in a not so professional atmosphere which made for some great conversation. it really should be a great year.

field hockey?

wait, field hockey??? i went to the iowa field hockey exhibition game today against missouri state. it was probably going to be the only game i was going to make having to cover swimming and football games. i knew i was going to at least have one fix this fall so i made it. unfortunately, one of the girls went down before the game even started and i ended up helping out and counseling. the entire team and staff are truly great and genuine people, something that isn't seen everywhere in today's society. being outside was great as well, just a little fresh air should help me ease into this upcoming week.

Grumpy old lady

I litterally couldn't agree more. Except minus the athletes I wouldn't have a job, and I don't think I could fairly say students and athletes are the same thing. Take that however you wish.

Grumpy old lady: "Work is really busy. I am a tigered puppy. Tomorrow and next week promise more of the same, then it should quiet down some. It’s tough to come back from vacation directly into the insane-est time of the year. I plan to make up for it by slacking heartily once it slows down.

I know I’m really more of a townie than a student now, because I get very grumpy when the students come back. Here are some of the things that suck about Iowa City in late August.

1. Sorority girls and frat boys everywhere. They get here early for rush, and boy is that nuts. I remember when I started college, my parents were driving me to my dorm, and all I could see as we drove past all the sorority houses was girls in black dresses. Everywhere. Sometimes I get flashbacks.

2. Confused parents driving the wrong way down one-way streets. Iowa City has a few (5, I think, in the downtown area), and it can be downright scary to find yourself facing off with an SUV with Illinois plates. Ay yi yi!

3. "

i have plenty of errands today including hospital badges, books, laundry, and plenty more. During one of my meetings today this quote was heard, "it's just a bit dicey." Plenty fine in most meetings to here that, it would be a bit worrisome if we were talking about driving, but almost unnerving when talking about health. and remember people sunscreen is important for all of your body and face including your lips.

I made it till about 4 and then was done for the day. It was great weather and i of course used sunscreen but forgot my face, so my face is fried. great weekend and great food but my life lesson from this weekend is to eat before i drink rather than drink before you eat.

well today I ended up in the training room to square away more beginning of the year material. i also ended up getting a new cell phone. unfortunately, the cell phone i had with field hockey was turned in. i also had added all the contacts to this phone when i was working summer camps. unfortunately, yesterday they updated all the cell phones and erased all the contacts. thats alot of hours that i have spent entering the same physicians, athletic trainers, students, and secretaries in 3 different phones. it could be much worse, i could not have a cell phone, and then no one could call me after 5pm.

Ricky Bobby

So Close, Yet ...
Originally uploaded by beebo wallace.
Well we finally had a week without a wedding. It was great, it was relaxing but we didn't know what to do with ourselves. Housework was done and we even watched some tv. We went out to eat with another couple and then went to a movie. The last movie Shellie drug me to was Brokeback Mountain. So this time it was my turn to pick.... my pick Taladaga (sp?) Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby. In my mind a much better movie, I'm sure some will argue with me about it, but there was much less thinking needed and the humor was there. Absolutely hilarious. Not much of a story, but there were plenty of funny lines. You knew what was going to happen from the beginning, but that is what we wanted last night. It's my kind of Nascar I guess.

Sickle Cell

Sickle Cell Anemia 3
Originally uploaded by GreenFlames09.
Recently, news has been made over a family who is suing regarding their sons death last year. I had read the article and read up on several sources and my dear grandmother sent me a copy of the article. The lawsuit targets physicians and athletic trainers. Though it had been noted by the medical examiner that viral meningitis was the cause of death, the parents and others suggest that sickle cell trait contributed to his death. They do note that viral meningitis was the cause and that sickle cell contributed. I do not want to take sides in the case or to make this a commentary but rather question the role of the case in the media. Should this case not focus on all athletes and their illnesses, and the care that all recieve in these facilities. I do not know the complexity of the case and I have not and will not read the briefs of this case or ever know all the medical history of the case. I hope that in the end the athlete who passed away is remembered. May his memory serve the proceedings of these cases and his wishes and dreams be remembered. And follow the Hippocratic Oath which the AMA cites as, " You do solemnly swear, each by whatever he or she holds most sacred: That you will be loyal to the Profession of Medicine and just and generous to its members. That you will lead your lives and practice your art in uprightness and honor.

That into whatsoever house you shall enter, it shall be for the good of the sick to the utmost of your power, your holding yourselves far aloof from wrong, from corruption, from the tempting of others to vice.

That you will exercise your art solely for the cure of your patients, and will give no drug, perform no operation, for a criminal purpose, even if solicited, far less suggest it.

That whatsoever you shall see or hear of the lives of men or women which is not fitting to be spoken, you will keep inviolably secret.

These things do you swear. Let each bow the head in sign of acquiescence. And now, if you will be true to this, your oath, may prosperity and good repute be ever yours; the opposite, if you shall prove yourselves forsworn. "

And get some good insurance. Makes me nervous.

Best man speech

Songs of Innosence

here is my original best man speech copied from the paper. It may not be a true representation of what was actually said.

Thank you all for coming here to celebrate with Christy and Tony. I know many of you traveled a long way to be here so thank you. Thank you all the Huls and friends for having us to your part of the state. Williams’ clan I know it was a trip but I don’t think the Williams clan would ever miss a party. Fravels I’m glad all of you were able to make it as well.
It’s an honor to be one of Tony’s best men. The first time I met Christy I could see in Tony’s eyes she was the one. She is truly one of the most caring and empathetic persons I have ever met.
I would like to welcome Christy into the family. You can no longer be called the new girl.
Often times the older brother gives advice to the younger brother during one of these speeches. Having no experience in this category, my advice is to look at your parents. Follow their lead and look towards them as role models.
I would like to thank the Huls and the entire county for the hospitality. I am glad to be part of the bigger family now. Thank you all and let’s have a great night. Here’s to Tony and Christy Fravel. Cheers.
