Studying

How much longer do you think I can study? I have been sitting here with my nose in a book for a long long time. I have so much more to go. Where do I need to get? Dermatomes, physics/biomechanics, and some anatomy relationships, and some modalities set up including e-stim and deep heating modailities. I still have to write up my research which is due on the April 1st and have to study for a neuroscience exam which is on the Wednesday after the boards. As a little break I put a voice mail me link over in the side bar. Send me a voice mail create a distraction for me. It's all free and it sends me an email with your voicemail as an mp3. I have been trying to use more and more of the technology studyguides that are being included with my books and exam guides. My computer just isn't up to snuff anymore. I am going to have to buy one in the future but am going to try to hold out for as long as possible. An update on the mumps, we had one more case on Friday. There has been more and more press coverage regarding the issue. My thoughts, goodbye avian bird flu, hello mumps! :)

3 more cases today. I refuse to get sick knock on wood. I have boards in 9 days which have cost me $900+. If I do quarantine shmarantine. The quarantine lasts from 7-12 days with no contact, classes, .... I tried to paint this pretty picture to them that it's just like another spring break only in Iowa City. I might be a liar.

mumps

Uh-oh. I thought mumps were over. The next thing you know we will have dyptheria running rampant across campus. FYI Mumps means 7-12 days of isolation. Spring break all over again.

Cook

Myth
Originally uploaded by Thomas Hawk.
I have been studying and cooking a lot this spring break. I plan on not cooking for a long time. Most of the creations are now in the freezer awaiting their turn to be eaten. I went to the store and bought a wide variety of produce just to be healthy. But, Shellie headed to San Francisco and I didn't want to let all the produce go bad. So here I am. Most of the recipes came from foodtv but a couple were just thrown together.
Potatoes and leek soup
Barley and chicken chili
Vegetable and barley chicken soup
Split pea and ham hock soup
Multibean tomato and vegetable soup
Goulosh

I no longer have any room in the freezer.

Plagiarism

NL/Nieuwegein/Bicycle?

Some interesting things are going on with plagiarism at Universities. For a while there have been some software options for Universities to crack down on those unwilling to do their own work. Unfortunately, some students and rightly so feel this creates an atmosphere based on fear and presumed guilt. Maybe; I am not going to agree or disagree on that one. Don't cheat and you won't have a problem. But the other side of the coin is the inclusion or loss of your intellectual property. For this software to work, specifically turnitin.com, you submit a students paper and it is compared to other literary works. What I don't agree with is the inclusion of the work which has just been submitted as part of the database to judge others against. For several reasons this should be avoided. Someone now "owns" and uses your work without paying the student. The students work now makes their company better (stealing from a student while trying to stop them from stealing seems a bit hypocritical). The other reason this isn't the best system is that one's intellectual property is now held by a company. Should they turn over this work any information contain within these documents can be used by someone else. Should your paper discuss your current research, your work can be used against yours and you are no longer the leader in this area. The examples can go on and on. This discussion will not go into the merits of Open Access, but I do think it needs to be brought up.
Should one plagiarise? Of course not. Do there need to be measures to limit this? Of course. Does there need to be another solution. Turnitin teamed up with a legal team to address the issues presented above. In fact they even address them in one of their brochures. Just because things are legal doesn't mean they are right. They even go on to state these issues are open to debate. What they are really saying is this is a grey moral issue, here's the tool. You pay us for the service and you do what you want. Some students have started to think there needs to be an alternative.
Like I said before, I am absolutely against plagiarism of any kind. But there needs to be some alternative. And I haven't for them to "hold on to my papers" even if its under physical security and sent over "SSL encryption." Thanks for the specific mention of your success at the University of Iowa.

Cubicles a Giant Mistake

Great Work Environment

Cubicles a Giant Mistake: "J to the D writes 'Apparently even the designer of the cubicle believes now that they are a bad idea.' From the article: 'After years of prototyping and studying how people work, and vowing to improve on the open-bullpen office that dominated much of the 20th century, Propst designed a system he thought would increase productivity (hence the name Action Office). The young designer, who also worked on projects as varied as heart pumps and tree harvesters, theorized that productivity would rise if people could see more of their work spread out in front of them, not just stacked in an in-box.'"

I feel for you all, I really do.

I love flickr and the options it provides but there seems to be a bit of a hang-up with the free version. I am limited right now to 200 pictures to be viewed. All older pictures are archived and hidden so that only the most recent 200 pictures can be viewed. The older ones aren't deleted so that they still can be viewed if I have included in my blog. I guess 200 pictures may seem like a lot but I have over 29,000 pictures. I don't think I would ever upload all of them, but I think I am going to have to come up with some sort of alternative. I might have to plop down $25 dollars a year or someone could gift it :), or I find a different service. If anyone has heard of any better services let me know.

I had my cholesterol checked today. Last semester it was at 270 which was a little outrageous. I got it checked today and it's right around 170. thats a 100 point drop. I think the first one may have been operator error. Anyone else have any opinions. That or dark beer may decrease cholesterol?
