on the final exam.
FOUR SUGGESTED STUDY TOPICS for Final Exam Essay Questions: (You will be
able to CHOOSE from similar topics, but more specific, for the final)

1.  Discuss migration and movement of peoples, ideas and music
genres/instruments across borders/regions. Give at least 2 examples.

2.  Discuss how particular religions (or philosophies) have influenced
music, performance and aesthetics of Asia , Turkey and the Middle East .

3.  Discuss music and ethnicity in North America --include the role of
certain musical instruments and music styles in establishing identity.
(Select one example from Iowa or the Prairies). What instruments have easily
crossed genres and why? Discuss two music traditions that crossed ethnic and
cultural boundaries, and what has been the role of the media?

3/8/06!
Someone pointed out to me after class that the online study guide did not seperate the terms in the listening section properly. I'm very sorry! this was a HTML error that I didn't catch when I pasted the material in from MS Word. It's now updated, so please print yourself a new one. I have also added the W.E. B. Dubois quote on "Double Consciousness" to the African American Music page, and just a couple of links to pictures in the minstrelsy section, which should help illustrate the kinds of stereotypes that were part of these performances.

3/8/06
Hip Hop in the News:
here are links to two coloumns in the Washington Post about the 3-6 Mafia song that won the Oscar on Sunday. Note the differences in the way the song, its lyrics and its performance can be interpreted. This is not essential material for the test, but is interesting and topical.
