Welcome to Amber Griffioen's Homepage

I am a PhD Candidate and teaching assistant in the Philosophy Department at The University of Iowa. Currently, I am writing my dissertation on the topic of self-deception. I hope to demonstrate that not only is self-deception possible, it is also (at least in some cases) both motivated and intentional. I also intend to explore just what it is that makes self-deception irrational, and to examine whether all cases of self-deception represent a moral (as opposed to a merely epistemic) failure.

My research interests include philosophy of action, practical rationality, problems of irrationality, value theory, medieval philosophy, and philosophy of religion. As far as historical figures go, I am very interested in doing future work on the philosophy of Abelard, Ramus, Kant, Kierkegaard, Heidegger, and Sartre.
