The MyWeb server is enabled
with FrontPage Server Extensions. These extensions support hit counters,
data collection (forms), database processing, and other FrontPage features that
non-extended servers don't. They also support advanced file upload software
and the ability to open and save web files using Internet protocols such as
HTTP.
Please do not forget to
read the important notes at the bottom of the page.
How
to establish your site as a Network Place and publish in FrontPage 2003
- note that this procedure is not available with Microsoft Vista. If using Vista the only publishing option when using FrontPage is SFTP-
1. In FrontPage, select
File > Open Site from the menu. This will bring up
the Open Site window shown below:
- Within this window click
on the My Network Places section (lower left) and then click
the create new folder icon (the small file folder icon
with the star-burst).

(Open Site window)
3. This
opens the Add Network Place wizard (shown below). Click
Next >.

(Add Network Place wizard)
4. In
the following window select "Choose another network location" and
then click Next >
5. Now you
specify the Internet address of your MyWeb site.
- Within the
field type: http://myweb.uiowa.edu/Your HawkID
- Click Next >

6. Now you
specify a name for the Network Place
- This name can be anything
you choose. It does not have any impact on your site name or URL. It is simply
a name for your Network Place and is local to your computer.
- Add a name and then click
Next >

7. On the next
window click Finish
- You will be prompted
to authenticate (log in) to your site
- Login by specifying your
domain\HawkID and password
- For information on the
HawkID system go to: http://hawkid.uiowa.edu

- That's it. Once
connected you should see two folders name images and _private.
These are created by FrontPage and are required for use with certain FrontPage
Extensions. Do not delete them unless you never plan to utilize any
FrontPage Extensions!
- Once you have established
your site as a Network Place and connected to the server
you are working "live." This means that if you make and save
any changes to a page or if you add and save a new page(s) they will instantly
be live on the server - there is no extra step needed to publish the pages
to the server.
- Please note that establishing
your site as a Network Place typically means that your site
files are not saved locally to your own computer so be sure to also save a
local copy of all of your files.
- To open your site subsequent
to establishing it as a Network Place:
- Open FrontPage
- Select File
> Open Site from the menu
- Click "My Network
Places" in the Open Site window
- Click on the Network
Place name you established for your site (step 6 above)
- Authenticate into
the site
Important
Notes
- The examples shown above
specify using iowa\hawkID when prompted for a user ID when
authenticating (logging-in). However, it is possible that your HawkID
may be contained within one of the other Active Directory domains on campus.
The other domains are: uihc, medicine, healthcare and public-health.
- Your sites main home
page must be placed within your top-level folder/directory (not within a sub-folder)
- Your home page file must
be named one of the following:
- index.htm
- index.html
- index.asp
- default.htm
- default.html
- default.asp
- Caution: Saving a file
you are working on while connected (logged in) to your site in FrontPage
will automatically publish the file to the server. This is a nice shortcut
to publishing single pages, however, be aware of this when working on files
while connected.
- You can also publish
your files via FTP using WS-FTP, Fetch, Dreamweaver, etc. For instructions
please go to: FTP Publishing Instructions
